Cambodian pepper has a long history of over 700 years, and has been known as one of the world's finest. Tracing back to the 14th century, the pepper was flourishing under the French rule in Indochina. The Cambodian pepper industry almost vanished in the 1970s under the Khmer Rouge regime but now it has been reestablished to become an important crop. ​
